1 2024–2026 — Research and development of a 1 megawatt electrolyzer suitable for series production, for green hydrogen generation
Beneficiary: GANZAIR Kompresszortechnika Korlátolt Felelősségű Társaság
Consortium partner: University of Szeged
Contracted funding amount: HUF 799,695,611
Funding rate: 64.17%
Implementation period: 1 July 2024 – 30 June 2026
Planned project completion date: 30 June 2026
Project ID: 2023-1.1.1-PIACI_FÓKUSZ-2024-00031
The operating principle of PEM water electrolyzers has been known for decades. Small-scale units have also been commercially available for a long time. However, systems operating in the megawatt range have only emerged over the past decade, almost exclusively as bespoke development projects. This also means that series production has barely been established, if at all — this process is only happening now. Moreover, it is common practice among the largest market players to assemble components that were originally pre-manufactured by suppliers for other or universal purposes, each individually suited to a general task, but without achieving the system-level operating efficiency that the most effective integration of individually optimised components would allow (e.g. cooling systems, pumps, water treatment, power electronics, gas purification — collectively, Balance Of Plant/BOP elements).
The frequently bespoke requirements also mean that the system-building process is slow and consequently expensive, and modification is cumbersome, since any change request requires modifying the entire system. Potential users sometimes require equipment without certain sub-functions (e.g. hydrogen purification), depending on their intended use and the functional units they already have available. Furthermore, manufacturing of the sub-function units cannot be outsourced to mass-production specialists, which would otherwise reduce total costs.
Within this research and development activity, carried out in consortium by GANZAIR Kompresszortechnika Kft. and the University of Szeged, a developed PEM electrolyzer suitable for green hydrogen production will be created. This offers a technological solution for the hydrogen demand emerging in the near future, opens new horizons for energy storage developments in both the domestic and export markets, promotes the decarbonisation of industrial and transport applications, and — through its preference for domestic suppliers — also has an economy-stimulating effect.
Based on its market experience of the past three years — including customer demand, the transformation of the energy sector, the hydrogen strategy, joint work with the association, and dialogue with suppliers — Ganzair decided to develop its own product. At a hydrogen technology showcase held in spring 2023, it became clear that the domestic supplier base is prepared and able to contribute at a high professional level. Ganzair's short-term business plan includes developing domestic manufacturing competence, so this development also fits into its business strategy, which its implementation and commissioning experience from the two domestic H2 projects will significantly advance and underpin.
Over the past decade, the focus of electrochemical research at the University of Szeged has continuously shifted towards the practical application of electrolysis technologies. This led to the natural need for scaling up, aiming to create electrolyzer systems that can be operated economically. Based on the information gathered from market research, the experience gained while designing the system installed at the Szeged Science Park, and the complementary competencies of the project partners, we believe we can achieve, over the course of the project, a technically and economically optimised product based on domestic manufacturers and suppliers.
The market significance and application of our project's resulting product can be described on four levels:
